hi,
just wondering if the tutors will be notified on who are the architectural engineers...
i don't think my tutor knows that I'm one..

Based on the "Hi All" im going to assume this applies to everyone and not just the Architectural Engineers.

Hi Russell,

Just to make sure, is it due midnight Friday 20th June as in the minute before it turns Saturday 21st, or is it due as Thursday 19th finishes?

Thanks

lol... "MIDNIGHT FRIDAY JUNE 20TH" is pretty self explanatory

hi,
i was just wondering if we're meant to submit a draft copy along with the final copy of our UT model. if so, how "draft" do you want it to be?

also, if we've used some custom textures from the internet, do we need to include that in the submission as well? if so, how?

Thanks

hey russell,
im having a problem with the player starts:
when you right click on a surface and say 'add player start'..it doesnt work and my player keeps dying when i play the game..
what am i doing wrong?
i cant get it to work and ive tried a few different ways that people have suggested.
thanks.

Hi All, .... including Engineers, Architectural Computing and Architecture students ... the extension does apply to everyone in the course. Midnight Friday 20th of June is the minute before it becomes Saturday. If your blog post or uploads have a date on them that says Saturday 21st of June then they would be late. If anyone is caught backdating their uploads or posts (yes we all know how to do it, and some of us know how to check...) then they will fail the course. Do not risk it. Your drafts should represent where you were in the last weeks of the experiment.

Regarding your player start problem, it's hard to tell from your description but if you are able to enter the game then it sounds like there is a play start there. Dieing instantly usually suggests that you haven't rebuilt it or there are no lights. Another possibility is that your player start is in a wall. Use the binoculars in the top tool bar to do a search for "playerstart", this will confirm if one is there or not.

Hi Russell,

I was following your steps on how to assign a material to a static mesh. However having done the 5 steps, i can see the texture within the viewport, but when i play my map, my static meshes look completely black.
What do you think is the problem?
Also i noticed that when the textures are applied they are really minuscule in scale, could that be why they are appearing black when played?
Thanks

Hi Russell,
the previous problem i had about my static meshes appearing black when playing the map, has been solved.
It was a problem with the lighting.
I now have another problem...lol
my static meshes spaces keep disappearing randomly. When i enter the space, some of the sides disappear, so essentially i walk through my walls because they are constantly disappearing.
How do i overcome this?
Thanks.

Hi Anonymous, Glad to hear you solved your black static mesh problem, and thanks for posting the solution too. My guess regarding the missing parts of the static meshes is that the polygon faces are facing the wrong direction (polygons are only single sided in computer games). If they are facing inwards then they will appear blue in SketchUp. Right click on them and choose reverse faces. Cheers, and good luck

Hi All, I just noticed Powel Wind posted the same advice to a student with the same problem a on one of my earlier posts. Next year we will definitely have a forum for ARCH1101 so we can capture all of the accumulated knowledge.

Cool, thanks heaps Russell, it worked!
And thank you Pouwel, i just read your comment as well.

And i think Russell the idea of the forum is excellent!
Pity it couldn't be implemented this year, however this forum your planning to set up next year for ARCH 1101, is that going to be exclusively for 1st year architecture students only?
Could we have a forum in general for all other softwares, such as the up coming UT3, Revit and even Sketchup!

Thanks once again.
Have a nice break

Hi Russell,
I'm having a bit of trouble actually getting my level to play at the moment. Whenever UT is open i get constant pop-ups saying "couldn't save package - maybe file is read only?", which doesn't cause a problem until i click play level, when i get the same popup, followed by a message saying 'steam error, application load error'. i'm logged into steam and have bought UT2004. i think it might be operator error though because i setup UT on another computer and the exact same thing happened. also, whenever i move my exp 3 file to another computer, none of the textures are saved...? just wondering whether there was a quick fix to this? i can't find anyone with the same problem...

Check if your using the Editor shortcut that you have downloaded from STEAM. i get that same message when i used the Editor Russell provided.

hey Russell,
just a quick question which i know a few people are still confused about. in the assesment criteria you state we need 1 sketchup model that contains our 2 elevators and our table. was this meant to me posted into 3d warehouse like we did for exp1 so u can look at it or just images from sketchup?... and also for the 2 draft ut models that you also want in the criteria was that meant to be two of our ealier models for this exp3 also posted to file front with links or just images with only the final one submitted?

thanks,
anonymous.

oh, yup i am using russell's editor and it's still not working. i googled a few things to try and get the steam editor shortcut like you said but i can't quite work it out (my technology skills - not so hot)...how did you get it?? thanks so much for the tip though!

Anonymous said...

ah i found it and it works, thanks fuat!!!!

Anonymous said...

hi russell,

the bridge doesnt HAVE to be hanging from a space right? say I wanted to have 3 separate floating spaces that only 'connected' through elevators, would I be pushing it?

thanks

Perhaps a Wiki type system could also come in handy for organising information rather than a forum.

hi russell,
im having problems with 4 things..

1) putting textures on static meshes (the faces arent blue)
2) importing one of my static meshes
3) playing the map (it says theres an error, then everything closes and my work is lost)
4) saving the packages (is there a special way to save them so they turn up when you next open the map?)

Hey Russell,

Hey Russell,

I haven't recieved my EXP3 mark yet and was wondering whether they have been sent out and I've just missed out or whether you haven't released them yet.

Thanks
