MOVER TUTORIALS FOR UT2004 AND SOME ADVICE

1. THIS LINK HAS SOME GOOD INFO REGARDING MOVERS IN UT2004: http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/Legacy:Mover_Topics

2. IF YOU WANT YOUR IMPORTED STATIC MESHES (FROM SKETCHUP) TO HAVE MULTIPLE MATERIALS THEN YOU WILL NEED TO BREAK THE SKETCHUP MODEL INTO PARTS THAT REFLECT EACH SEPARATE MATERIAL AND THEN EXPORT AND IMPORT THEM SEPARATELY. ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THIS A FEW TIMES IT DOESN'T TAKE VERY LONG AT ALL. USE THE ATTACHING ACTORS PART OF THE TUTORIALS ABOVE TO ATTACH THE VARIOUS PARTS BACK TOGETHER IF YOU WANT THEM ALL TO MOVE (I.E. YOU WANT YOUR ELEVATOR TO HAVE MULTIPLE MATERIALS).
3. THE IMAGES BELOW SHOW THE STEPS YOU GO THROUGH TO ASSIGN A MATERIAL TO A STATIC MESH IF YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN TO SELECT ONE BEFORE YOU IMPORTED IT FROM SKETCHUP, OR YOU WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE IT ONCE IN UT2004. STEP 1 SHOWS THE EXPANDED MATERIALS SLOTS ONCE YOU HAVE CLICKED ON THE LITTLE PLUS SIGNS NEXT TO THEM. BEFORE YOU DO STEP 3 SELECT YOUR NEW MATERIAL IN THE TEXTURE BROWSER. THE TEXTURE WONT APPEAR ON THE STATIC MESH UNTIL YOU HAVE UPDATED IT BY CLICKING IN THE 3D WINDOW, STEP 5.

Am I able to steal these pictures to put on my blog - for the same tip?

hi russell, i was just wondering - what program do you use to make the sketchup and unreal tutorials?

Hi, both Jeremy and I used Adobe Captivate for those tutorials. I think it works pretty well, much quicker to prepare than a series of still images and I think the movement helps with the comprehension. How do you think they work?

easier to prepare and easier to follow except when you need to stop and follow something which takes longer than it takes on the capture. the tutorial about exporting .ase from sketchup for example; without being able to pause, i had to go back and watch the whole thing if i missed a detail. jeremy's use of vimeo as a medium of distribution also means that the video can be paused & replayed from any point, which comes in handy when following something

Hi Russell,

I'm trying to import a model I'm experimenting with into UT. I followed all the steps correctly from your tutorial, however when I got to right-clicking onto a surface in the 3D viewport in UT the static mesh did not show up... I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, any suggestions?

Nevermind, I figured it out.

Hi Tania, what was your problem and how did you fix it?

tania milinkovich said...

Well the first couple of times I tried exporting an object from sketchup into UT everything worked up to the point where you were meant to right click on a surface in the 3D viewport and select 'add static mesh'. I'm pretty sure my problem was back in sketchup, where I had to repeat the process of exporting, I had too many separate faces or something like that...Can't quite remember now! I've been playing with this program too much lately my mind is all over the place!

Hi Russell,
I'm having the same problem as Tania at the moment. My static mesh is in the 3D viewport but whenever i right click to add it to my map nothing happens. I imported one version successfully but had to delete it because the sketchup man followed my lift into the map and all subsequent attempts have failed. Just wondering if you had any ideas?

Hi Russell,

I have a problem with importing the SketchUp model. Whenever I import the SketchUp model into UT, some parts of my SketchUp model are missing and don't show up in UT. For eg. the floor or some parts of the wall of my model do not show up at all. Do you know what the problem is?

Thanks

I think your problem is that you have not reversed the grey faces of the model before exporting. All the faces of the model must be the white colour in sketchup before you export the model. If they are grey, they will not appear in UT. Just right click on the grey surface and select 'reverse faces'. Hope this works..

Hey Pouwel,

I tried your method and it worked! You're an absolute legend :)
Thanks heaps for your help!

yo all,

looked through the wiki article on movers but i still can't get past this problem im having. how do you get a mover to pause at every key (position)?

for example if i want a mover to move up through multiple levels stopping for a while at every level, for passengers to get out etc.

thanks for any help

Check your delay time - i think this does the trick...

i am the last anonymous asking about movers pausing at keys. i tried changing the delay time but that didnt make the mover pause. still lost about that one.

another probably i am encountering, which is probably more pertinent at this point in time, is that on the first (initial move after restarting the game) move of every mover the mover only goes to key 2 and then back to key 1. on the second move it goes through the whole circuit but the first move stuffs up. i use key 1, 2, 3 etc, i do not use key 0 (base).

if anyone can help me out on either of these two problems i would be willing to buy them several beers!! lol
